Credit Cards

Credit Cards

Question:

"I've heard that you have to get a credit card to build credit, but so many people build up credit card debt and I'm afraid to do it... "

" I was told to get a credit card and put a $300 balance on it and make payments on it for 6 months to year... I'm very concerned because I've heard so much about credit cards causing harm..."

"I had a card when I was young and totally messed up my life with it... I don't want another one..."

"I don't want to use a credit card, I pay cash for everything..."

Answer:

I want to take a moment to talk about credit cards. The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, and The Not As Ugly As You Think Because You Aren't Thinking Of Them Right... Is that too long?

What you are about to read takes me 30 minutes to an hour to explain verbally with people sometimes, because they ask questions and I have to keep checking for understanding. It took me two hours to write. You can read it in less than 10 minutes.

**If you read nothing else, read the end: How does a credit card affect you?**

The Bad and Ugly

Credit Card Debt... is evil! It's a tool of the enemy to keep you subject to fear and bondage. Satan has designed this debtors system from the ground up. Every time you vote for a person, from either party, that wants more Government Spending, you are voting for more debt. Debt is BAD. The Borrower becomes a servant or slave to the lender. After years of working with people's finances I can assure you this is TRUE!

Is debt a sin? No. God said that he'd make you a lender and not a borrower. Well, you can't lend to people if it's a sin, because you'd be helping them sin and God doesn't empower you to help people sin. But it's not God's Highest will for any person to be in or stay in debt.

A young child get's out of high school and goes to college and gets a credit card. He sees an $800 limit. He's never even made $800 a month at his job yet, but he sees this as a path to get things he wants. "I can't afford that... wait, no problem, I'll put it on the credit card..." 10 years later he's still paying that card off... Sound bad? It was me! I know first hand, credit cards can be a powerful tool of slavery if used incorrectly.

However...

The Good

Money, Credit, Hammer, Nail. What does these four have in common? They are just tools. Neither good nor bad. A hammer can be a powerful tool to smash a vase! A hammer can be a powerful tool to build a home. It's just a tool. It's the heart and understanding of the one who uses it that determines it's effectiveness and direction. Passion, without direction, is pointless. So having the right heart, but not the knowledge and skill is still without any positive effect for you.

A credit card is a tool. What is that tool for? The bank divides credit card users into 2 categories. There are Debtors and Transactors.

Debtors

A debtor is a person who looks at their checking account and sees $500. Then this Debtor looks at their credit card and sees $1,000 available credit. In their lightning fast mind they see $500+$1,000=$1,500. Whoo Hoo! I can spend $1,500 right now! Momma needs a new pair of shoes... Daddy needs that new sports thingy he's been dreaming about... etc... This person can't pay off that card, so they now set in to the LONG task of making payments on that card. Hopefully they're smart enough to realize they must pay A LOT more than the minimum payment if they ever want to see that card paid off, and more than likely it will take them a year or two to pay it off... unfortunately the mindset that had them creating the debt, usually prevents them from seeing clearly how to get out of debt also.

Transactors

A Transactor sees that SAME $500 balance in checking and the SAME $1,000 available credit, but does some different math. They say I have $1,000 on the card and $500 in checking $1,000-$500,... So I have $500 to spend this month. In other words this person doesn't see this as extra money. This person sees that they have $500 and they could either spend that with their credit card, debit card, checks, cash, etc... but they still only have $500 to spend.

A transactor pays off their card, IN FULL EVERY MONTH. They carry no balance over, and pay no interest. They use the card as a tool.

Why use a credit card at all? Here are some reasons:

  • Protection
    • FRAUD: Your card is lost, someone uses it, you file a claim and the money is refunded. This takes 7-10 business days many times. It doesn't matter if the fraud was on a Credit Card, Debit Card, or Check... It's going to take a little while to refund. BUT on a credit card it's only tying up your "Available Credit" NOT your "Cash Balance" like fraud on a check or debit card would. Yes you'd get the money back either way, but the credit card makes that wait more comfortable.
    • Purchase Protections: There are things SOME credit cards offer that debit cards typically don't.
      • If you rent a car, the credit card may cover the insurance so you don't have to pay extra for that.
      • If you pay your monthly cell phone bill through the credit card the card may cover the insurance on the phone so you don't have to pay for that.
      • Certain items you purchase are guaranteed against loss or damage.
  • Rewards
    • GET PAID to spend your own money. With credit card rewards you can earn cash back, gift cards, and more for making purchases you were going to make anyway. This way your money is working for you more.
      • Debit Cards used to offer this, and at most banks they don't anymore. But even when they did the rewards were less than the credit cards rewards were.
  • Building Credit
    • You CANNOT build a GREAT credit score without a credit card. You can't. There are idiot bloggers out there saying "You don't need a credit card, just do XYZ..." Here's the thing. You can build SOME credit without a credit card.
    • You CAN build GOOD/DECENT credit without a credit card. You cannot build GREAT credit without a credit card... more on this in a moment.
    • Again, despite the bloggers who love to misinform you, paying rent, utilities, insurance, cell phone bills, etc... does NOTHING for your credit. All of that positive info you are building helps with certain public profiles, but it does not help your credit reports or scores at all.
      • NOT paying them may send you to collections which could ruin your credit, but the positive stuff doesn't help. You must pay on a "Credit Product" or "Trade Line" to build credit. These are Credit Cards, Loans, and Lines of Credit. That's pretty much it. Only these build credit.

The Things You Didn't Think About...

What do you mean by building GREAT credit?

FICO is the company that creates the credit score that most banks use to make credit decisions. They are THE credit score. There are others, but non as popular as FICO. At this time (10/08/2012) FICO doesn't look at your job, income, rent, phone bills, etc. They only look at Credit Products, because they only look at your "Credit Reports" which are reports about how you use your "Credit". There are three credit reporting agencies. Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax

You can and SHOULD obtain a free credit report at least once a year, from EACH of the three credit reporting agencies. Each agency will have a different mix of items reported and therefore you have THREE credit scores by default. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com, or use a free/low cost trail offer of Identity Theft Protection. I prefer the latter because those companies usually tailor the reports to make them easier to read and understand. I also suggest having an on going service with one of these companies because you can keep tabs on your reports that way without affecting your score. Pulling your own score, through any monitors service has NO downside effect on your score.

Here are some reputable credit report/ID Theft Monitoring companies.

FICO sees your credit score like this:

  • Payment History (Making payments on credit products)
  • Amounts Owed on credit products
  • Length of Credit History ( how long credit products have been open)
  • New Credit (when was the last time you applied for new credit)(this is where those "Inquiries" or "Hard Hits" affect you.
  • Types of Credit used (They want to see experience with ALL credit types, including credit cards)

How does a credit card affect you?

  • Payment History

    • ANY time a credit product shows that something was due, and you paid at least what was due you get an "OK" stamp for that month. Whether you paid a $25 payment on a $300 card balance, or you had a balance of $1.50 and you paid the whole $1.50, either way you get an "OK" stamp for that month.
    • Therefore the idea of getting a balance on a credit card and making payments could have some merit... BUT...

  • "Usage" part of "Amounts Owed"

    • Usage kills the idea of putting a $300 balance on a $300 limit card and making payments on it.
    • Usage asks two questions. How much is available on the card? How much are they using?
      • $300 credit limit (Available Credit)
      • $300 balance on the card
      • =100% Usage
      • Grade F.
    • FICO actually wants you to use LESS than 30% of your credit limits, less than 10% would be best.
      • $300 credit limit
      • $1.50 Balance
      • = 0.5% Usage
      • Grade A
    • To figure out how much of your credit limit you can use and stay in good graces take the credit limit ($300) times 10% (0.10) [or 30% max (0.30)]. On a $300 credit limit you should not use more than $30-$90 during the whole month.
      • $300 credit limit
      • $30 balance ($90 balance)
      • =10% Usage (30% Usage)
      • Grade A
    • If you pay the balance in full you will not pay interest.  But the card, and credit report, will STILL show your balance as of the statement date so don't use more than 30% tops!

  • Length of Credit History

    • The older your credit history and average age of all your credit accounts, the better.
    • Credit Cards (and some other credit lines) are the only products that stay open forever.
    • Loans (Mortgages, Student Loans, Auto Loans, Etc) all eventually get paid off, refinanced, or closed/sold). Every time you close a loan it is removed from the average age of your open accounts. Every time you get a new loan it reduces the average age of your accounts.
    • If you have 3 CC's. One is open 2 years and two are open 5 years. Your average age is 4 years. (2+5+5)/3=4.
    • Close one of the 5 year old cards (2+5)/2=3.5 and you now have an average age of 3.5 years.
    • Close the 2 year old card (5+5)/2= 5 and you now have an average age of 5 years.
    • FICO prefers that you have 1-3 credit cards and no more. Department store cards like dillards, kohls, target and walmart count as credit cards. You should have no more than 3. Closing them may hurt you because of the above math.
    • Because you don't want to open new cards or close old ones unless you have to, choose 2 great cards, keep them active, used regularly, and open forever. Never close a card unless you must or get a new one unless there is a significantly good reason to do so. If you already have 5 credit cards do more research before closing any.

  • TYPES of credit used

    • The more variety of good history you have the more secure your credit looks to be.
    • Some people with high credit scores are still declined for auto loans because they've had no "loan" experience. Adding a credit card or two can balance out your experience.

BOTTOM LINE, My Advice:

Get 1 or 2 credit cards (NOT 3). Make sure these are cards you can use everywhere (Visa, Master, Discover, Amex logos) NOT a department store card or jewelry store card. These should be cards you can use frequently for small amounts. Walmart/Target may be OK, IF you shop at walmart/target frequently already

Go out ONCE A MONTH and make a RIDICULOUSLY SMALL purchase. Go buy a $1.50 Dr Pepper, a $5 Cheeseburger, or $30 in gas. Put the card in the back of your wallet and don't touch it again. Wait for your statement, PAY IT IN FULL!

This way you'll NEVER pay interest on a credit card, you'll NEVER get into credit card debt, and you'll STILL build credit. In fact, because of usage scoring, your credit will be BETTER than the one who put the $300 balance on his card and made min payments for a year.

Do this every month, from here on and into the future. DO NOT put big purchases on your card. DO NOT use more than 30% of your available credit during the course of the month. DO NOT use more than 2 cards (3 if you must, no more). DO NOT EVER carry a balance over (paying less than the total statement balance).

It's not that hard. If you don't have the discipline to make one purchase and pay it off you shouldn't be even talking about credit. You should be building a habit of saving and budgeting first. Until you have a savings started, it's a waste of time to start building your credit. Once you have developed the habit of saving and NOT touching that savings, and you are working some form of a budget, THEN build credit. Don't touch credit until you have that down first.

Praying for our leaders, ALL our leaders. There is a temptation living inside each of us to assume we're right and MAKE others listen to us. When a leader does something we disagree with, we want to scream about it. This is MORE true for many Christians. We are, uniquely, aware of Righteousness and God's Standards. When an evil King/Leader does what is evil, we abhor it, and we reject it. However... is it possible that there is a right way and a wrong way to reject a leader and his/her decisions? We can never tolerate evil, especially in our leaders. In the USA we are given a privileged that few others enjoy, we can choose our leaders and even eject them if need be. But there must still be a right way, a right attitude and heart with which this must be done.

Proverbs 25 (New King James Version)

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter. 3 As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable. 4 Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. 5 Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness. 6 Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, And do not stand in the place of the great; 7 For it is better that he say to you, "Come up here," Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen.

God is showing us here that it is HE who appoints leaders and HE who uses them for HIS purposes. The sooner we get that in our mind the sooner we can get on board with His plan. Does God choice for leader always get elected? No. God will not override the will of the people. However it is God who gifts men for their office and God will use any man in an office by the very nature of his office. What do I mean by that?

Consider if you will a thought. Satan has no creative power. He is powerless and has been since the beginning  The BEST Satan can do is to use his words to twist the minds of men. Satan has no authority to make anything happen. He must convince people to do as He says through lies, fear, and threats. Satan, therefore, cannot "Anoint" a leader. Satan cannot give power or ability to someone to lead that he doesn't already have. This means that anyone who leads does so because he has been gifted by GOD for that office. Satan can only twist that man or woman not empower them. Just as King Saul turned from God's anointing to become evil, and Saul of Tarsus turned from his deception to become God's anointed, leaders possess the gifts from day one. How they use them is up to them and God's leading.

Therefore, even an evil man must be subject to God's direction, and at times intervention. Why is this important. God will do two things to an evil leader. First, in compassion, God will reach out to him, and plead with him through Mercy. If he turns God will use that man for his purposes. If he does not turn, God will still use him for a time, and then reject him and replace him with another.

This brings me great hope in these uncertain times. It means that no matter how dire or evil the situation looks, those who belong to God can pray, turn to God, and He WILL intervene. It's not a matter of IF. God WILL change things for His people. He may choose his own way of doing it, it may not be what the people think it will be. They may call for Him to replace and he leads the leader to repent instead. They may call for Him to lead the leader to repent and God replaces him. How God brings about Change is HIS business. But we are to pray for the change, stand boldly on His Word for that change, and believe God will do as He says he will.

Daniel 2:21 (New King James Version)
And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.
Romans 13:1 (New King James Version)
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

Our job here is to pray. Pray for God's will to be made known, and then stand on that knowledge, believing God will bring it to pass.

LOVE in Action

COME:

1 Thessalonians 4
3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. 7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. 8 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.

9 But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 10 and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; 11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.

HEAR:

There is one theme I see in the verses above. I see God commanding holiness in our lives. Not to make us subject to bondage but to keep us free from the affects of death. In this holiness not only should we be pure in our actions, such as being sexually pure, but we should be pure in our attitudes. We are to keep a quite life. This doesn't mean we don't stand for righteousness in a fallen society and make the will of God known in the public square. That, especially in the USA, we SHOULD do. But this does mean that we don't brow beat people who never asked for our opinions. The Church at large has done such a poor job of loving the sinner. We hold the sinner to our standards. We say unless you be like us, you are to be shunned. We forget, that at one level or another, we WERE that sinner before Jesus. Even the one raised in Church and believing in Jesus from a young young age has his or her past and current sins. Rather than trying to be perfect and make everyone else perfect... let's learn to love people with the love of God. That is what the chapter goes on to say. LOVE one another.

Does love mean accepting sin? NO! Does love mean accepting the sinner WITHOUT trying to make them just like you and make them believe what you believe? YES! That means I can walk up to my Gay female co-worker. I can ask her how her girlfriend is doing... JUST as if I was asking my straight co-worker how his wife was doing. I can mean the question sincerely. I can be honestly interested in their welfare. They never asked me my opinion on whether being Gay was right for them or any of my opinions on the subject. To bring it up wouldn't be acting in LOVE. IF, the day comes that my walking in LOVE with those coworkers who don't believe as I believe causes them to ask me about the HOPE that it is in me. I'll tell them. I still won't brow beat them over the sin in their lives. Jesus died for ALL sin. I won't bring up theirs or mine. It's all under the blood, even if they don't know it yet. And they are never going to ask me to help them receive that forgiveness if I'm arguing about their life choices.

I mind MY business. I work with my hands, doing the assignments the LORD has placed on me, and I do it in LOVE and EXCELLENCE. Those who will follow, will follow. I'm called to Pastor. I have no Church right now. But my sheep are those who I come in contact with that ASK ME to lead them. They come, one by one, one at a time... I have no right to correct a Christian who is speaking in doubt and unbelief or any right to correct a someone living in a Gay lifestyle. The only time I EARN that right is when I have loved them sufficiently that they ask me to become that advisors. When that happens I must make sure I continue to walk in LOVE so that I don't loose that right. Thank you Jesus for teaching me to walk in LOVE.

DO:

I'm going to keep my preaching to myself... LISTEN MORE... TALK LESS... and SHOW people the LOVE of GOD, rather than TELL PEOPLE about the what they're doing wrong... Thank you Jesus!

PRAYER:

Father, help me! I need to remember your GRACE IN ME so that I can be YOUR GRACE THROUGH ME to others! Holy Spirit, help me to remain firmly rooted in your love for me. Thank you for the opportunity today to love others, as you have loved me! Darrell

Attitude Is Altitude

Attitude Is Altitude.

It’s amazing. I saw God work a miracle in my sales numbers in this year. All without my doing anything different, just having a better attitude and daring to agree with my wife’s faith that God could do more for me there. I’d given up on the job. But I decided that if she could believe God would do more for us there, then I could at least try to agree with her. Some great move of faith huh?!
SO… I said, God I agree with my wife’s faith on this issue. I ask you now, do more for me there at the job. Suddenly at the end of the 2nd quarter, weeks from not ending without any bonus at all, TWO miracles happened.

Miracle 1

First of all, with nothing more than an attitude change. My sales numbers spiked up. Almost all of my metrics looked better. We have a great sales system at my job that allows us to track conversations with customers, as we talk to them by phone. Since many people prefer not to open things over the phone, but don’t mind talking about them by phone, we have as many, if not more, customers talk to us and then go in to open the product as we do those who let us do it directly. This is called the “pipeline”.
WELL… the pipeline started dumping out results and all of a sudden I wasn’t personally opening anything more than normal, but more and more of those people I’d talked to decided to do what I advised and open things. Well now things are cooking, but not enough to bump me into bonus category.

Miracle 2

THEN, my boss comes to me and tells me that he has great news for me. This has only happened “One other time in the ten years I’ve worked here…” They decided upstairs that they budgeted a certain amount for bonus pay and they aren’t paying enough people. So they lowered the bonus requirements!
And just like that. Weeks from the end of the quarter I went from getting NOTHING to getting $1,700… Man, God is good!
Well, that was great… but you know what else happened. Those last few weeks of June went into overflow in July and I hit and surpassed the loan volume I did in the whole previous quarter 2 weeks into the new month. I started the new quarter already set to bonus. All that was to be determined was by how much… In July I was in fact number 2 in the whole department!

Then I Changed

I wish I could tell you that it ended there and I soared into superstardom!
Finances were tight, I decided I still needed a second job to make ends meet… even though I’d been fighting it for two years. I let that discourage me and threw a month long pity party… So August… not a great month. In fact, IF my month in August had been average I would have sailed through the quarter, but my month in August was pitiful and actually started to bring down my quarter. I actually ended August in danger of dropping one level… And it should be noted, as with June and July… I wasn’t personally closing anything more or less than I had previously… pipeline just started to dry up…

Turn Around Again…

Repent Means to Change the Mind (Even if you have to do it over and over…)

SO… I catch this trend and turn it around, with the help of my wife and boss, in the last days of August.
It is now the end of week 2 in September… my attitude has been improving throughout the last few weeks… You want to guess what happened?
Suddenly! My pipeline came alive again and stuff started closing again. My numbers are creeping up away from the danger zone. I actually climbed one level in one category. I’m now on pace to make nearly double, if not double, what I made last month… Hmmm…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ0UFbU2tFU

What lesson could we take away from this? It’s not about being better at your job than other people… it’s not about getting the best skills, the newest tricks, the best new catch phrases… attitude. It’s all about attitude. As you begin to relax. Trust that in GRACE your Father in Heaven already has your best interest at heart, you are where He has you for now. Bloom where you are planted, as I’ve been reading in Joel Osteen's book “Every day a Friday”.

Take Aways?

Has it been easy? NO! Sometimes I get SO FRUSTRATED! It feels like I’m the ONLY one doing the right thing and everyone else is cheating their way through and getting better results. It feels like the people who transfer callers to me have no integrity but I have to. It feels like the ones at the top who make the decisions to ignore these integrity issues are putting pressure on me…
1 Kings 19:10
10 So he said, "I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."
Can you see the prophet now? Mighty man of God… whining and complaining to God… “Woe is me… Woe is me…”
But things aren’t always as they feel. Maybe there aren’t as many issues as I see… maybe I see them because I’m looking for them, like a person who buys a new car, and then suddenly sees that car EVERYWHERE!
1 Kings 19:18
The Lord Said…”18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him."
God always has a plan… it’s always better than yours! It always involves him doing for you, that which you could not do for yourself!
I must return to GRACE. Only as I allow the GRACE of God to rule my heart, can I dispense that GRACE to others! What does that mean? If I hold myself to a higher standard, to the point that I get frustrated with myself if I see my numbers drop, complain so that they drop further, and spiral down into a cycle… I’m not allowing God to do for me, that which I could not do for myself. GRACE is about letting God do for you what you could not do for yourself, and that which he’s been just waiting for the chance to do for you. When GRACE brings results they bring GLORY to God.
So I let GRACE rule my heart and mind. I didn’t do it perfectly… just as before… it might have been more me agreeing with my wife and God than rising up in my own faith… but look at the results.
It just took the pressure right off of me. I stopped allowing the pressure to take me down. God will have to add his super to this natural, or I’m not going to get the results I want. SO I do the right thing, the right way, the right time, because it’s right and I do it right… then I let God have the results and the Glory. If I succeed it’s on Him, and He never fails!
Thank you Jesus! I hope this helps you, I know it did me! I just hope I remember this tomorrow in the middle of the fire again… If you want to hear some GREAT messages on this topic I suggest you listen to Jennifer Rastovski from 14Forty.Com! Check the messages from This week (September 2012) and Last, and those to follow titled “Boundaries Get in the Zone”.
